In late May last year, some 250 salespeople at American Express learned they weren't going to get paid. In addition to earning commissions, the Premium Wire volumes helped them reach higher compensation tiers, known as kickers. For the first time, the Premium Wire product made economic sense. The presentation discussed shifting the sales focus toward Premium Wire and another product to "accelerate revenue growth and meet client's needs." Isserlis said Williams was fired because of misconduct unrelated to Premium Wire.

David Solomon has been Goldman Sachs' CEO for over four years since succeeding Lloyd Blankfein. There's been a lot of talk about the morale at Goldman Sachs. Solomon said there were fewer "partner transitions at Goldman Sachs" in 2022 than any year "going back to 2014." Meanwhile, Solomon's expensive foray into consumer banking raised the ire of some longtime Goldman partners, as Insider has previously reported. The fresh faces among the Goldman Sachs executives who took the stage at the bank's investor day highlight the leadership changes under Solomon.
Hamza Fodderwala of Morgan Stanley's pick: Palo Alto NetworksPalo Alto Networks stock over the last 12 months, as of May 25 Markets InsiderTicker: PANWPrice target: $255We think Palo Alto Networks is going to be the first $100 billion market cap company in cybersecurity, or about a $300 stock, within two years. In our view, Palo Alto Networks is the best transformation story in software since Microsoft. In recent years, they've really modernized a lot of their security offerings for the cloud and they have multiple products that are best of breed. They can use that telemetry to feed their AI models and help automate a lot of security. Palo Alto Networks can really address this pain point for customers.

Goldman has internally announced a slew of leadership changes in its investment bank. Goldman's Aasem Khalil will take on Posnett's role as global head of investment banking services. A fresh face will now lead one of Wall Street's most powerful investment banking groups. She ultimately served as co-COO of TMT and head of Internet investment banking before being appointed head of investment banking services. Succeeding Posnett as head of global investment banking services is Aasem Khalil, a Goldman partner and 26-year veteran of the Wall Street bank.
Kristopher Fador is Bank of America's new chief information security officer, succeeding Froelich. Craig Froelich is taking the helm as the chief information officer of architecture, developer experience, and policy, a newly created role at Bank of America. Froelich previously served as chief information security officer for the nation's second-largest bank, a role he held for more than eight years. He also spent time in Hong Kong for BofA, leading regional information security teams, according to his LinkedIn. At Goldman Sachs, for example, CIO Marco Argenti has made developer experience a key focus of his strategy.
Kim Posnett was just named head of Goldman's all-important TMT investment banking group. Posnett, 43, has long been one of the most senior figures at Goldman's investment bank. Posnett was previously the head of Goldman's investment-banking services unit, which acts as a salesforce for the global IB division. The former co-head of Goldman's TMT franchise will become co-chairman of the unit. The former would result in the IB services group, which functions, in effect, as a sales force.
JPMorgan on Monday morning emerged as the white-knight buyer of First Republic Bank. More wealth advisors for high-net-worth clientsJPMorgan's wealth management ambitions will also get a boost from its purchase of First Republic. The smaller bank has about 150 high-end advisors who will join JPMorgan's brokerage business unit, JPMorgan Advisors. "If they can retain the wealth advisors and not lose too many more, I think it will be very advantageous. "This helps bring the bank crisis phase to the home stretch in our view," wrote Wells Fargo's Mayo.
JPMorgan is now mandating all managing directors work from the office five days a week. But that rubbed some workers the wrong way, who vented on an internal messaging system, per Reuters. They griped about being stuck in virtual meetings despite being in the office, long commutes, and family responsibilities. In the same video, Clarke even lauded one employee's work ethic who he said "sold their family dog" to improve work performance. Read the JPMorgan return to office memo in full here.
Goldman Sachs' M&A team operates under a similar mandate, albeit with a few more zeros. Why bother stressing over 10 $1 billion deals when you can just do a $10 billion deal? It's not just the M&A market that's facing issues. The bank has held the top spot on the year-end M&A league tables for decades, but it is hearing footsteps. More on Goldman's M&A strategy amid an industry drought.
Goldman was forced to share its M&A crown with JPMorgan last quarter. It's been a tough road in 2023 for the Wall Street banks that specialize in advising on mergers and acquisitions. In a note sent to Goldman's alumni network last Tuesday, Feldgoise acknowledged that things have been tough. The importance of Goldman's M&A franchise was underscored by the bank's first-quarter earnings released Tuesday. "The Goldman M&A franchise has been #1 for 20+ years," Feldgoise said in his letter.
Michael Klein was tapped last year as CEO of CS First Boston, Credit Suisse's investment banking spinoff. There's a new casualty of the banking crisis: Wall Street deals veteran Michael Klein. Credit Suisse and Klein "have mutually agreed to terminate the acquisition of The Klein Group," the company said in its first-quarter earnings announcement. It marks the latest blow for Credit Suisse's investment bankers. Here's everything you need to know about Klein and what the scuttling of the deal means for Credit Suisse's investment bankers.

JPMorgan, BlackRock, Wells Fargo, and Citi reported earnings Friday. Top execs described their response to the banking crisis — and future opportunities. The message was clear, wrote Wells Fargo bank analyst Mike Mayo in a note to clients Friday. Quarterly earnings calls held with research analysts marked an opportunity for Wall Street's biggest executives to face questions about the impact of the March banking crisis on their firms' bottom lines. Here's what the leaders of JPMorgan, BlackRock, Wells Fargo, and Citigroup had to say about SVB.
JPMorgan informed employees Wednesday that managing directors are required to come to the office five days a week. Many of JPMorgan's lower-level employees are still required to come to the office three days a week. JPMorgan issued a memo to employees on Wednesday informing managing directors of a new requirement to be in the office five days per week. It also stated that the responsibilities of managing directors include being "visible on the floor," along with meeting with clients and being available for feedback and advice with lower-level employees. JPMorgan has about 1,600 managing directors, according to 2019 CNBC report.
But do you think execs will be OK with their subordinates working remote while they are stuck in the office? Plenty of others, most notably Goldman Sachs' David Solomon, have touted the importance of being in the office (blah blah mentorship model blah blah). Now JPMorgan just laid the blueprint for everyone else to force their own employees back in. Here are more details, including the internal memo, on JPMorgan forcing MDs back into the office. Salt Labs wants to help low- and medium-income workers build wealth via an app that operates like a frequent-flyer program.
The law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell might cut employees' bonuses if they don't return to the office. "We're very focused on having our team in at the same time," Neil Barr, chair and managing partner at Davis Polk, told the Wall Street Journal. The era of widespread remote work might be coming to a close economy-wide, as firms tighten their belts and try to get their workers back in. As mass layoffs sweep some sectors that embraced remote work — like tech — companies that are letting workers go are increasingly asking for their remaining workforce to come back in. That's because even companies that have chosen to embrace remote work may be doing so in part because it allows them to pay workers less.
JPMorgan Chase is abandoning a hybrid attendance policy it adopted during the pandemic and requiring executives to return to the office. On Wednesday, JPMorgan, the nation's largest bank by assets, said it will now mandate that all managing directors come to the office five days a week. In 2021, he wrote in his annual note to shareholders that he envisioned many JPMorgan employees returning to the office full-time, while allowing for exceptions. Tracking attendance is not only important to manage hybrid work schedules but also for real estate, resiliency and security purposes. In the meantime, you can find many useful tools and resources on the Hybrid Working page.

We've got names and faces for more than 100 top JPMorgan leaders across investment banking, and more. The bank's CEO and chairman, Jamie Dimon, has consequently been a leading voice shaping both Wall Street and Main Street for decades. On Tuesday, JPMorgan's board of directors provided a little more insight into its CEO succession plans via a 116-page annual proxy filing. Additions to the organizational chart also highlight the growth within some of JPMorgan's key teams. It also provides some clues as to who might one day succeed Dimon, Wall Street's longest running CEO.
Why, then, has Dimon been so willing to swing back into action in the wake of Silicon Valley Bank's collapse? But it's starting to look like JPMorgan — and Dimon — will end up winners no matter how things turn out. In backstopping First Republic, JPMorgan helps a client and a bank that experts say would fit nicely into its business. By saving First Republic, JPMorgan also stands to gain goodwill from Silicon Valley startups, which are customers of the smaller bank. The paper also reported that regulators asked Dimon, Bank of America, and other banks to buy Silicon Valley Bank and pay out depositors over the insured limit.

Warren Buffett: Before you jump down my throat, realize this is a list of the most powerful people in finance not on Wall Street. Place your vote here — or name someone else — for who you think is the most powerful person in finance.
